People have been telling John Russ what he could not do his entire life. After 10 years of being a successful disc jockey in Wilmington, NC, he has come to embrace doubt as a form of motivation.

King of the Party was produced as part of the Carolina Photojournalism Workshops in 2012. The workshops are designed around collecting and sharing personal narratives from a community using documentary photography and film. As a participant, I found, filmed, and edited John Russ' story over a five-day period. The films were screened locally in Wilmington, NC as well as presented on the Port City Stories interactive website.
